Matthew Wilson PhD is an intellectual historian at Ball State University, College of Architecture and Planning in Muncie, Indiana. He has taught the global history of architecture at learned institutes in Europe and the Americas, and has presented his research on utopianism at conferences across the world. Wilson’s research focusses on the nineteenth and twentieth-century political, philosophical, ethical, and epistemological aspects of environmental design. He was awarded a postgraduate degree with distinction from the Architectural Association in London. Wilson’s subsequent PhD research as a Crossland Scholar at Royal Holloway, University of London, was awarded La Maison d’Auguste Comte’s Prix de Thèse. He is the author of Moralising Space: the Utopian Urbanism of the British Positivists, 1855-1920. Wilson’s lecture series at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales is entitled ‘The Altruistic Spatial Imagination: a history of Comtean ideas in Britain’.
